One of the frustrating experiences of my youth was asking my mom how to spell difficult words.  “Look it up in the dictionary” she would respond.  Dismayed, I would walk away and mutter under my breath (always, under my breath!) “How can I look it up if I don’t know how the word is spelled?” Similarly, when asking “Why this?” or “Why that?’ I was often dispatched to the library with instructions to return and provide HER with a detailed explanation.  As a result, I became an active patron of the Maywood Branch Library during my elementary years.  This early and intimate relationship with research and reporting taught me the immense satisfaction of applying analytical skills to areas of personal interest.

Now, decades later, I draw upon those childhood experiences and apply the lessons learned to my passion for the visual arts.  A budding “collector”, I exert considerable energy and resources expanding my knowledge of art history while staying abreast of the ever-changing contemporary art world. I guess you could say I've always been attracted to pursuits which cater to an inquisitive nature.

I am particularly drawn to contemporary artworks of various media created by African American artists and others of the African Diaspora.  My personal explorations continue to reveal a dearth of information on this uniquely categorized group.  As a result, I have organized my research efforts and joined with a few friends to produce this newsletter and share with you my discoveries.  We hope to assist your efforts to learn more of the exciting and innovative works of art presently being created by these artists who share a cultural and artistic history.  Our predominant objective is to direct you to information and events that highlight this group's contribution to the expansive and evolving genre of Contemporary Art.
