April 2006

Well I went to the Armory Show.  Wow.  Went to Scope. Very Wow. And then over to Pulse/Impulse. Okay.

For those of you who've done any of the many different art shows, you can imagine how exhausted I was on return to Atlanta.  That said, I can't wait to do it all again next year!  Did someone say field trip???

As a young enthusiast / emerging collector-type, I was thrilled by the energy, industry and creativity that filled the various venues.  I agree with the notion "too much is not enough" in contrast with the oft-repeated reflection/criticism that the fairs are overwhelming.  Of course one has to be sensible with regard to expectations and time management.  With that caveat, I think there is no better opportunity to uncover new talents and glean current trends in the contemporary art market.  Likewise, the Armory/Scope/Pulse fairs serve as a smorgasbord of artists and artworks the likes of which are unavailable in scale or scope in the U.S., save for perhaps December's Miami Basel.

As a result of my NYC sojourn and other professional engagements, I missed out on several local happenings in Atlanta.  Most regrettably, I was unable to attend the Yun Bai opening at Wertz ContemporaryJason (Wertz) has done well to follow his successful Parallel Identities group show with the work of this bold new talent.  Bai's work is an intriguing comparison with that of Stella Lai, shown recently by Brian Holcomb at Saltworks.

Also notable during the month of March was the High Museum's second annual dinner celebration of the David C. Driskell Prize.  Hats off to Rhonda Mathieson and others who work tirelessly to further this increasingly significant contribution to Contemporary and Diasporic arts.  This year's artist celebrant is Willie Cole.  Check out the links below to learn more of Cole's work.

Enough of my rambles.  Enjoy your April!
